A sip of cocktail history
They say alcohol and politics should never be mixed. Let the Old Fashioned be the exception that proves the rule.
The cocktail was born in Louisville, Kentucky, where a certain James E. Pepper is said to have invented it while working behind the bar of a local club. Pepper followed his dreams to New York and took the recipe with him to the bar of the Waldorf-Astoria hotel.
The year 1880 went down in history not only for Mr Pepper but also because the former governor of New York, Samuel Tilden (yes, we checked), withdrew from the US presidential race. According to The Chicago Daily Tribune, the occasion was celebrated with fashionable Old Fashioneds made with Scotch and Irish whiskey. Historians tell us Finnish whisky made from rye wasn't yet available.
The Old Fashioned has kept its place to this day. Besides politicians, the classic whisky cocktail has fans in every walk of life around the world, and bar professionals have named it their favourite for years. We like it too – especially when it's made with Finnish whisky made from rye.
